When New York–based computer training company General Assembly planned to add Atlanta to its locations of campuses worldwide, they brought in Hannan for a total overhaul of the 1926-era Sears Roebuck & Company building’s 18,000 SF second floor.

The Challenge
Housed within the massive, 1926-era Sears, Roebuck & Co. building—part of the adaptive-reuse effort at Ponce City Market—the space required extensive remediation of asbestos and other hazardous materials. Additionally, maintaining the building’s historic integrity while creating open work areas, classrooms, private team rooms, and collaboration spaces demanded a sensitive balance between preservation and innovation.
The Results
The completed space delivers a modern, flexible environment that still reflects the character of its historic setting. With restored architectural elements and cutting-edge functionality, General Assembly gained a vibrant hub that not only fosters creativity and collaboration, but also preserves a piece of Atlanta’s history.
